J. K. Rowling은 전 세계적으로 5억 권 이상 팔린 아동 fantasy 소설 Harry Potter 시리즈(전 7권)의 작가다. Harry potter 시리즈를 쓰기 시작할 때는 빈민 구호 대상이었으나 이제는 재산 규모가 1조 원 이상이다. 이 중 수백억 이상을 기부했다. 다음은 2008년 하버드 대학교 유명 인사 초청 졸업 축사다.

실패가 주는 유익과 상상력의 중요성

 

I shall never forget the African torture victim, a young man no older than I was at the time, who had become mentally ill after all he had endured in his homeland. He trembled uncontrollably as he spoke into a video camera about the brutality inflicted upon him. He was a foot taller than I was, and seemed as fragile as a child. I was given the job of escorting him back to the Underground Station afterwards, and this man whose life had been shattered by cruelty took my hand with exquisite courtesy, and wished me future happiness.

 

당시 저와 비슷한 나이 또래인 아프리카 출신 고문 피해자를 절대 잊지 못해요. 고향에서 참혹한 일을 당한 후 정신적인 고통을 겪고 있던 그는 잔인한 고문에 대해 카메라 앞에서 증언하며 몸을 가누지 못할 정도로 떨었어요. 덩치는 저보다 머리 하나는 더 컸지만 어린아이처럼 빈 틈이 많았어요. 그 사람을 지하철역까지 배웅해주라는 지시를 받았어요. 사람들의 잔인함으로 인생이 망가진 이 사람은 헤어질 때 저의 손을 꼭 잡고 예의를 갖추어 항상 행복하라는 축복을 저에게 해 주었어요.

 

And as long as I live I shall remember walking along an empty corridor and suddenly hearing, from behind a closed door, a scream of pain and horror such as I have never heard since. The door opened, and the researcher poked out her head and told me to run and make a hot drink for the young man sitting with her. She had just had to give him the news that in retaliation for his own outspokenness against his country’s regime, his mother had been seized and executed.

 

세상을 떠나는 날까지 잊지 못할 또 하나의 일은 텅 빈 복도를 걷다가 어느 사무실에선가 들리는, 그때에 처음 듣고 그 이후로는 들은 일이 없는 고통과 공포의 비명이에요. 문이 열리고 한 연구자가 머리를 내밀고 그녀와 함께 있던 사람을 위해 뜨거운 차 한잔 빨리 가져다 달라고 부탁했어요. 연구자는 그 사람에게 잔인한 정권을 고발한 이유 때문에, 고향에 남아있던 어머니가 처형되었다는 소식을 어쩔 수 없이 전했던 거에요.

 

Every day of my working week in my early 20s I was reminded how incredibly fortunate I was, to live in a country with a democratically elected government, where legal representation and a public trial were the rights of everyone. Every day, I saw more evidence about the evils humankind will inflict on their fellow humans, to gain or maintain power. I began to have nightmares, literal nightmares, about some of the things I saw, heard, and read. And yet I also learned more about human goodness at Amnesty International than I had ever known before.

 

20대 초반 사면위원회에서 일하면서, 민주주의에 입각해 선출된 정부와 법의 보호를 받고 공개 재판이 보장된 나라에 사는 삶이 얼마나 운이 좋은 일인지 매 순간 되새기며 다녔어요. 사람들이 권력을 얻거나 유지하기 위해 같은 사람에게 얼마나 악마 같은 일을 자행하는지 매일 목격했어요. 보고 들은 일 때문에 악몽을 꾼 일도 많아요. 하지만 그에 못지않게 그곳에서 일하면서 올바른 심성을 가진 사람도 많다는 점을 알게 되었고요.
