J. K. Rowling은 전 세계적으로 5억 권 이상 팔린 아동 fantasy 소설 Harry Potter 시리즈(전 7권)의 작가다. Harry potter 시리즈를 쓰기 시작할 때는 빈민 구호 대상이었으나 이제는 재산 규모가 1조 원 이상이다. 이 중 수백억 이상을 기부했다. 다음은 2008년 하버드 대학교 유명 인사 초청 졸업 축사다.

The Fringe Benefits of Failure, and the Importance of Imagination 4

실패가 주는 유익과 상상력의 중요성

 

 

You might never fail on the scale I did, but some failure in life is inevitable. It is impossible to live without failing at something, unless you live so cautiously that you might as well not have lived at all – in which case, you fail by default. Failure gave me an inner security that I had never attained by passing examinations. Failure taught me things about myself that I could have learned no other way. I discovered that I had a strong will, and more discipline than I had suspected; I also found out that I had friends whose value was truly above the price of rubies.

 

여러분은 저처럼 크게 실패하지는 않을 거예요. 하지만 살다 보면 실패는 어쩔 수 없이 겪게 되죠. 실패하지 않고 살 수는 없어요. 물론 정말 소심할 정도로 조심하면 그럴 수도 있겠지만 이런 삶은 그 자체가 실패에요. 제 경우에는 실패를 겪고 났더니, 시험 통과한 것으로는 얻을 수 없는 편안한 자신감을 얻었어요. 다른 방법으로는 도저히 얻을 수 없는 교훈을 얻었죠. 스스로 생각했던 것보다 의지도 강하고 통제력도 있다는 점도 알게 되었고, 어떤 보석으로도 살 수 없는 친구들의 우정도 발견하게 되었어요.

 

The knowledge that you have emerged wiser and stronger from setbacks means that you are, ever after, secure in your ability to survive. You will never truly know yourself, or the strength of your relationships, until both have been tested by adversity. Such knowledge is a true gift, for all that it is painfully won, and it has been worth more than any qualification I ever earned. 

 

고난을 겪고 나서 더 현명해지고 강해졌다는 사실은 어떻게든 살아남을 수 있는 능력을 갖추게 되었다는 뜻이에요. 시련을 겪고 나면 비로소 자신의 진면목을 잘 알게 되고 다른 사람과의 관계가 얼마나 강했는지도 깨닫게 되죠. 이런 깨달음은 하늘의 선물과도 같아요. 힘들게 얻었고 내가 얻은 어떤 자격 보다도 귀한 것들이죠.

 

So given a Time Turner, I would tell my 21-year-old self that personal happiness lies in knowing that life is not a check-list of acquisition or achievement. Your qualifications, your CV, are not your life, though you will meet many people of my age and older who confuse the two. Life is difficult, and complicated, and beyond anyone’s total control, and the humility to know that will enable you to survive its vicissitudes.

 

내가 시간을 돌려 스물한 살의 나를 만날 수 있다면, 사람의 행복은 이룬 성과나 무엇을 받았다는 데 있지 않다고 이야기해주고 싶어요. 무엇을 할 수 있는 자격을 얻었거나 이력서에 멋진 경력 몇 줄 적는 것이 인생의 전부가 아니죠. 물론 여러분은 제 또래 아니면 저보다 나이 많은 사람들 중에 이 사실을 깨닫지 못하는 사람을 만나게 될 거예요. 인생은 쉽지도 간단하지도 않아요. 또 누구도 마음대로 할 수도 없어요. 하지만 이런 점을 알고 있으면, 예측이 안 되는 인생에서 살아남을 수 있다는 것이죠.
