J. K. Rowling은 전 세계적으로 5억 권 이상 팔린 아동 fantasy 소설 Harry Potter 시리즈(전 7권)의 작가다. Harry potter 시리즈를 쓰기 시작할 때는 빈민 구호 대상이었으나 이제는 재산 규모가 1조 원 이상이다. 이 중 수백억 이상을 기부했다. 다음은 2008년 하버드 대학교 유명 인사 초청 졸업 축사다.

실패가 주는 유익과 상상력의 중요성

 

Now you might think that I chose my second theme, the importance of imagination, because of the part it played in rebuilding my life, but that is not wholly so. Though I personally will defend the value of bedtime stories to my last gasp, I have learned to value imagination in a much broader sense. Imagination is not only the uniquely human capacity to envision that which is not, and therefore the fount of all invention and innovation. In its arguably most transformative and revelatory capacity, it is the power that enables us to empathise with humans whose experiences we have never shared.

 

제가 상상력을 두 번째 주제로 택한 이유가 상상력 때문에 제 인생이 바뀌었기 때문이라고 생각할지도 모르겠군요. 사실이지만 그게 전부는 아니에요. 물론 아이들의 상상력을 위해 잠자리에 들기 전에 이야기를 해주는 것이 얼마나 중요한 지에 대해서는 아무리 강조해도 지나치지 않아요. 하지만 저의 상상력은 훨씬 더 넓은 세계에서 배웠죠. 존재하지 않는 일을 존재한다고 믿는 상상력은 사람 만이 가진 능력이고 모든 발명과 혁신의 원천이에요. 제가 주장하는 상상력은 세상을 바꾸고 다른 사람을 교육시키며, 우리가 경험하지 않은 일을 겪은 다른 사람의 마음을 배려하는 깨닫음을 주는 힘이 있죠.     

 

One of the greatest formative experiences of my life preceded Harry Potter, though it informed much of what I subsequently wrote in those books. This revelation came in the form of one of my earliest day jobs. Though I was sloping off to write stories during my lunch hours, I paid the rent in my early 20s by working at the African research department at Amnesty International’s headquarters in London.

 

제 인생을 바꾼 한 가지 경험은 해리포터를 쓰기 전이에요. 물론 그 경험이 해리포터 시리즈와 그 이후에 영향을 미치기는 했지만, 젊었을 때 임시직으로 일하면서 얻은 것들이에요. 점심시간에 조용히 빠져나와 이야기는 계속 써 나갔지만, 20대 초반의 저는 집세를 벌기 위해 런던 국제사면위원회(Amnesty International)의 아프리카 문제 연구 부서에서 일을 했어요.

 

There in my little office I read hastily scribbled letters smuggled out of totalitarian regimes by men and women who were risking imprisonment to inform the outside world of what was happening to them. I saw photographs of those who had disappeared without trace, sent to Amnesty by their desperate families and friends. I read the testimony of torture victims and saw pictures of their injuries. I opened handwritten, eye-witness accounts of summary trials and executions, of kidnappings and rapes.

 

그곳에서 독재 정권하의 사람들이 몰래 빼내 온 급하게 휘갈겨 쓴 편지를 읽었어요. 편지를 빼낸 이들은 발각되면 투옥되는 위험을 감수하고 자신의 나라에서 무슨 일이 일어나는지를 알리기 위해 이 일을 한거죠. 흔적도 없이 사라져 버린 사람들의 사진도 보았어요. 이 사진은 사라진 이들의 가족과 친구들이 절박한 마음으로 사면위원회에 보낸 것이었어요. 고문 피해자들의 증언과 상처 입은 사진도 보았어요. 즉결 처분, 납치, 강간이 자행되었다는 증언이 적힌 편지도 있었어요.

 

Many of my co-workers were ex-political prisoners, people who had been displaced from their homes, or fled into exile, because they had the temerity to speak against their governments. Visitors to our offices included those who had come to give information, or to try and find out what had happened to those they had left behind.

 

함께 일하는 동료 중 많은 이들은 당당하게 일어나 자신의 정부와 맞선다는 이유로, 고향에서 쫓겨나서 망명객이 된 사람들이었어요. 우리 사무실에 찾아오는 사람 중에는 정보를 주려고 오는 사람, 떠나온 고향에 남기고 온 사람에게 무슨 일이 생겼을지 알아보고 싶은 사람들도 있었어요.

 

 

국제사면위원회 강령: 어두움을 보고 욕하지 말고 촛불 하나라도 켜자
