실패가 주는 유익과 상상력의 중요성
Amnesty mobilises thousands of people who have never been tortured or imprisoned for their beliefs to act on behalf of those who have. The power of human empathy, leading to collective action, saves lives, and frees prisoners. Ordinary people, whose personal well-being and security are assured, join together in huge numbers to save people they do not know, and will never meet. My small participation in that process was one of the most humbling and inspiring experiences of my life.
사면위원회는, 자신들은 고문을 당하거나 투옥된 적이 없지만, 그런 끔찍한 일을 겪은 사람들을 위해 일하는 수많은 사람들 때문에 운영되었어요. 다른 사람을 배려하는 마음이 합해져서 생명을 구하고 죄인들을 해방시켰죠. 편안하고 안전하게 살 수 있는 수많은 사람들이 힘을 합해, 그들이 알지도 못하고 앞으로 만날 일도 없을 사람들을 구하기 위해 발 벗고 나셨어요. 그 과정에 조금이라도 참여한, 조그만 일을 했지만 그래도 일생에서 가장 가슴 벅찬 경험이었어요.
I might be tempted to envy people who can live that way, except that I do not think they have any fewer nightmares than I do. Choosing to live in narrow spaces leads to a form of mental agoraphobia, and that brings its own terrors. I think the wilfully unimaginative see more monsters. They are often more afraid. What is more, those who choose not to empathise enable real monsters. For without ever committing an act of outright evil ourselves, we collude with it, through our own apathy. One of the many things I learned at the end of that Classics corridor down which I ventured at the age of 18, in search of something I could not then define, was this, written by the Greek author Plutarch: What we achieve inwardly will change outer reality.
그렇게 살아가는 사람들을 부러워할 수도 있겠지만, 그런 사람들이라고 해서 우리보다 악몽에 덜 시달릴 것 같지는 않아요. 좁은 세상에서 살려고만 하면 열린 세상에 대한 두려움이 생기고 큰 공포로 이어질 거예요. 의도적으로 상상력을 발휘하지 않으려고 하면 더 큰 두려운 상대를 보게 돼요. 더 자주 두려움에 빠질 것이고 다른 사람을 배려하지 않는 사람들은 더 무서운 괴물들을 만들어 내고 있는 셈이죠. 자신이 악마 같은 짓은 저지르지 않는다고 해도, 악마 같은 사람들과 동조하는 셈이에요. 제가 18살에 마음에 열망을 품고 고전을 읽으며 알아낸 사실은, 그리스의 플루타르크가 말한 대로 우리가 우리의 마음을 바꾸어야 이 세상을 바꿀 수 있다는 점이죠.
That is an astonishing statement and yet proven a thousand times every day of our lives. It expresses, in part, our inescapable connection with the outside world, the fact that we touch other people’s lives simply by existing. But how much more are you, Harvard graduates of 2008, likely to touch other people’s lives? Your intelligence, your capacity for hard work, the education you have earned and received, give you unique status, and unique responsibilities. Even your nationality sets you apart. The great majority of you belong to the world’s only remaining superpower. The way you vote, the way you live, the way you protest, the pressure you bring to bear on your government, has an impact way beyond your borders. That is your privilege, and your burden.
정말 놀라운 진리이고 우리가 살면서 얼마나 맞는 말인지 매일 깨닫게 돼요. 이 말은 우리와 끊을 수 없는 다른 사람과의 관계를 나타내고 있어요. 우리가 존재한다는 사실 자체로 다른 사람의 삶에 영향을 주죠. 그러나 오늘 하버드를 졸업하는 여러분은 얼마나 다른 사람들의 삶에 영향을 끼치리라고 생각하나요? 여러분의 지성, 열심히 공부할 수 있는 능력, 여러분이 애써서 획득한 졸업장 때문에 여러분은 독특한 위치와 책임감을 갖게 될 거예요. 심지어 여러분의 국적 때문에 여러분은 다른 나라 사람들과 구별되죠. 여러분 대부분의 국적은 아직 까지 유일하게 남아 있는 초강대국에 속해 있어요. 여러분이 누구를 투표로 선출하고 어떻게 살며 어떤 일에 항의하고 정부에 어떤 압력을 가하는지 등이 미국이라는 국경을 넘어 다른 나라에 영향을 끼칠 거예요. 이는 여러분의 권한이기도 하고 여러분의 큰 부담이기도 하죠.

Call it magic, but the rain held off while Harry Potter creator J.K. Rowling delivered the keynote address this afternoon (June 5) at Harvard University’s annual meeting of the Harvard Alumni Association.
