J. K. Rowling은 전 세계적으로 5억 권 이상 팔린 아동 fantasy 소설 Harry Potter 시리즈(전 7권)의 작가다. Harry potter 시리즈를 쓰기 시작할 때는 빈민 구호 대상이었으나, 이제는 재산 규모가 1조원 이상이다. 이 중 수백억 이상을 기부했다. 다음은 2008년 하버드 대학교 유명 인사 초청 졸업 축사다.

The Fringe Benefits of Failure, and the Importance of Imagination 1

실패가 주는 유익과 상상력의 중요성

 

President Faust, members of the Harvard Corporation and the Board of Overseers, members of the faculty, proud parents, and, above all, graduates. The first thing I would like to say is ‘thank you.’ Not only has Harvard given me an extraordinary honour, but the weeks of fear and nausea I have endured at the thought of giving this commencement address have made me lose weight. A win-win situation! Now all I have to do is take deep breaths, squint at the red banners and convince myself that I am at the world’s largest Gryffindor reunion.

 

파우스트 총장님, 하버드대 관계자, 교수 여러분, 무엇보다 오늘의 주인공 졸업생 여러분, 우선 감사하다는 말을 해야 하겠네요. 하버드에서 연설하는 멋진 영예를 주심에 감사드립니다. 하지만 이 중요한 졸업 축하 연설을 해야 한다는 부담에 몇 주간 두렵다 못해 속까지 안 좋아져서 체중까지 줄었습니다. (웃음) 연설을 하니 저에게도 확실히 좋은 점은 있어요. 이제는 심호흡을 하고 저기 보이는 하버드 대학교 빨간색 깃발을 바라보며, 여기는 해리포터 소설에 나온 호그와트 마법학교 그린핀도어 (상징이 빨간색) 기숙사 출신들의 동창회라 생각하면 되겠네요.

 

Delivering a commencement address is a great responsibility; or so I thought until I cast my mind back to my own graduation. The commencement speaker that day was the distinguished British philosopher Baroness Mary Warnock. Reflecting on her speech has helped me enormously in writing this one, because it turns out that I can’t remember a single word she said. This liberating discovery enables me to proceed without any fear that I might inadvertently influence you to abandon promising careers in business, the law or politics for the giddy delights of becoming a gay wizard.

 

졸업 축사는 엄청난 책임감이 따르는 일이지만 제 졸업식을 떠올리고 나선 그 생각이 바뀌었어요. 당시에 축사를 해준 분은 영국의 유명한 철학자인 Mary Warnock 교수였어요. 그 연설을 떠올리면서 큰 위안을 받았죠. Warnock교수가 한 말이 지금은 한마디도 생각나지 않기 때문이에요. 얼마나 마음이 편해졌는지 몰라요. 그러니 오늘 제가 무슨 말을 해도 여러분은 한마디도 기억하지 못할 것이고, 혹시나 내 말에 영향을 받아서 장래가 창창한 사업가나 정치가, 법률가의 길을 포기하고, 게이 마법사가 되면 어쩌지 하는 걱정은 하지 않아도 되니 말이에요. (청중들 웃음)

 

You see? If all you remember in years to come is the ‘gay wizard’ joke, I’ve come out ahead of Baroness Mary Warnock. Achievable goals: the first step to self improvement. Actually, I have wracked my mind and heart for what I ought to say to you today. I have asked myself what I wish I had known at my own graduation, and what important lessons I have learned in the 21 years that have expired between that day and this.

 

보세요. 이제 여러분이 최소한 '게이 마법사'농담이라도 기억하면 저는 Warnock 교수보다는 훨씬 큰 일을 이룬 것이 되잖아요. 달성 가능한 일부터 하나씩 하다 보면 발전의 계기가 되는 법이죠. 사실 오늘 여러분에게 무슨 말을 해야 하나 머리를 쥐어짜면서 내가 대학을 졸업할 때 알았으면 좋았을 것들이 무엇인지, 그리고 졸업 후 21년이 흐르는 동안 배운 것은 무엇인지 생각해보았어요.

 

I have come up with two answers. On this wonderful day when we are gathered together to celebrate your academic success, I have decided to talk to you about the benefits of failure. And as you stand on the threshold of what is sometimes called ‘real life’, I want to extol the crucial importance of imagination. These may seem quixotic or paradoxical choices, but please bear with me.

 

두 가지를 찾아냈어요. 여러분이 힘들게 공부를 마친것을 축하하여 모인 이 곳에서 실패가 주는 유익에 대해 이야기하면 좋겠다고 생각했어요. 그리고 사람들이 말하는 '진짜 세상'으로 이제 나가려고 하는 여러분에게 상상력이 얼마나 중요한지도 이야기하려고 해요. 말이 안 되거나 상황에 전혀 어울리지 않는 선택이라는 생각이 들더라도 조금만 참아주세요.
