미 해군 윌리암 맥레이븐 ( William H. McRaven) 제독의 2014년 University of Texas at Austin (UT) 졸업식 축사.
UT는 맥레이븐 (McRaven) 제독의 모교다. 당시 제독은 미해군 특수전 사령관 (USSpecial Operations Command)이며 2011년 파키스탄에 숨어 있던 빈 라덴을 찾아내어 처단한 넵튠 스피어 (Neptune Spear) 작전의 책임자다.
이 연설은 2024년 현재 거의 이천만이 시청했다. McRaven 제독은 자신의 군생할, 특히 해군 특수부대 SEAL/UDT (Sea, Air, Land/ Underwater Demolition Team 전천후 미 해군 특수부대) 훈련 경험을 바탕으로 이제 사회에 나가는 젊은 학생들을 위한 10가지 교훈을 전달하고 있다. 특수전 베테랑 군인답지 않은 온화한 카리스마가 넘치는 미 해군 엘리트 제독의 연설에서 인생의 지혜를 배울 수 있다. 10가지 주제별로 정리해서 게재할 예정이다. 먼저 연설 동영상을 시청할 것을 권한다.
Thank you very much, thank you. Well, thank you president Powers, Provost Fenves, deans, members of the faculty, family and friends, and most importantly, the class of 2014, *it is indeed an honor for me to be here tonight. **It’s been almost 37 years to the day that I graduated from UT.
I remember a lot of things about that day. I remember I had ***a throbbing headache from a party the night before. I remember I had a serious girlfriend who I later married. That’s important to remember by the way. And I remember I was getting commissioned in the Navy that day, but of all the things I remember, I don’t have a clue who the commencement speaker was and I certainly don’t remember anything they said.
감사합니다. 총장님 이사장님 교수님들 졸업생 여러분. 이 자리에 서게 되어서 정말 영광입니다. 제가 제 모교인 텍사스 대학을 졸업한 지 37년이 되었네요.
제 졸업식이 생생하게 기억납니다. 그 전날 밤 파티에서 마신 술 때문에 머리는 깨질 듯이 아팠고 당시 사귀던 여자 친구와 함께 있었지요. 저기 앉아있는 분이고 나중에 결혼했지요. 그리고 그날 해군 장교로 임관될 예정이었지요. 이런 것들은 기억하지만 그날 초청 연사가 누구였는지는 생각나지 않고 어떤 말을 했는지도 전혀 기억이 없네요.
◈ 문법과 표현 해설
*it is indeed an honor for me to be here tonight.
to be here라는 부정사의 의미상의 주어를 표현하기 위해서는 for me (전치사 다음이니 당연히 I의 목적격인 me가 온다)를 사용한다.
honor는 철자는 h로 시작하지만 h 가 발음이 되지 않기 때문에 an honor가 된다. “내가 이런 자리에 서게 되어서 영광입니다.”라는 표현은 워낙 많이 사용되는 표현이어서 외워두는 것이 편하다.

보통은 It has been almost 37 years since I graduated from UT.라고 써서 since를 기준으로 앞에는 현재 완료 뒤에는 과거로 쓰는 형식이 일반적이다. 그러니까 과거에 어떤 사건이 발생했는데 (이 경우에는 졸업이라는 사건), 그 사건 이후로 오늘 이 순간까지 37년이 흘렀다는 의미를 이렇게 표현한다. 물론 지금처럼 표현해도 전혀 문제없다. 연사가 이렇게 표현한 이유는 지금 시점에서 계산해 보면 졸업했던 날이 37년 전이라는 점을 강조하기 위해서인 것으로 보인다.
***a throbbing headache
머리가 아프다는 의미인 headache 앞에 여러 가지 수식어를 붙일 수 있겠지만 throbbing은 저녁에 술 많이 먹고 아침에 깨었을 때 빨리 뛰는 맥박에 맞추어 머리가 욱신욱신 아픈 현상을 묘사하는데 딱 맞는 영어 표현이다.
So acknowledging that fact, if I can’t make this commencement speech *memorable, I’ll at least try to make it short. So the university slogan is, what starts here changes the world. Well, I’ve got to admit, I kind of like it. What starts here changes the world. Tonight there are almost 8,000 students or there are more than 8,000 students graduated from UT.
So that great Paragon of analytical rigor ask.com says that the average American will meet 10,000 people in their lifetime. 10,000 people, that’s a lot of folks. But if every one of you change the lives of just 10 people and each one of those people change the lives of another 10 people and another 10 then in five generations, 125 years, the class of 2014 will have changed the lives of 800 million people, 800 million people.
그렇다면 졸업식 축사를 여러분이 기억할 만큼 할 수 없다면 최소한 짧게는 해야겠다는 생각은 합니다. 텍사스 대학의 표어는 여기 대학에서 시작하여 우리가 세상을 바꾸리라는 것이지요. 맘에 듭니다. 여기에서 시작하여 세상을 바꿉시다. 오늘 이곳에는 8천 명의 졸업생이 있고 우리 대학을 졸업하는 학생은 8천 명이 넘지요.
상식적으로 조금만 따져 보면 알 수 있지만 평균적으로 미국에 사는 한 사람이 평생 만 명의 사람을 만난다고 합니다. 만 명은 정말 큰 숫자이지요. 그러나 만일 여러분 각 한 사람이 여러분이 만나는 사람 중 열 명의 인생을 바꾸고 또 그 사람들이 각각 10명의 인생을 바꾼다면 다섯 세대 그러니까 125년이 지나면 2014년 올해 졸업하는 여러분은 8억 명의 인생을 바꿀 수 있다는 말이지요.

memorable을 영어로 달리 표현하자면
1. worth remembering; notable: a memorable speech.
2. easily remembered.
1. 기억할 만한 가치가 있다
2. 쉽게 기억할 수 있다.
정도가 될 것이다. 쉽게 보이는 단어도 영어 사전 등을 보면서 이해하고 구체적 용법을 익히면 영어를 읽거나 쓸데 큰 도움을 받을 수 있다. 언어는 이해도 중요 하지만 적절하게 사용하는 것도 그에 못지않게 중요하기 때문이다.

1. His speech at the wedding was short but incredibly memorable.

Think about it, over twice the population of United States go one more generation and you can change the entire population of the world. 8 billion people. If you think it’s hard to change the lives of 10 people change their lives forever, you’re wrong. I saw it happen every day in Iraq and Afghanistan. A young army officer makes a decision to go left instead of right down a road in Baghdad and the 10 soldiers with him are saved from a close in *ambush.
In Kandahar province, Afghanistan, a non-commissioned officer from the female engagement team senses that something isn’t right and directs the infantry platoon away from a 500 pound IED saving the lives of a dozen soldiers. But if you think about it, not only were those soldiers saved by the decisions of one person, but their children were saved and their children’s children, generations were saved by one decision, one person.
생각해 보세요. 이 숫자는 미국 인구의 두 배 되는 수이고 한 세대만 더 지나가면 전 세계 80억 인구를 다 바꿀 수 있다는 말이지요. 만일 여러분이 열 명의 사람의 일생을 영원히 바꾸는 일이 어렵다고 생각한다면 그렇지 않습니다. 이라크와 아프가니스탄에서 이런 일이 매일 일어나고 있음을 직접 목격했습니다.
한 젊은 육군 장교가 우회전하지 않고 좌회전하기로 결정해 열 명의 부하가 매복 공격을 당하는 것을 피한 일이 있었지요. 아프가니스탄의 칸다하르 지역에서 아프간 여성들을 담당하는 부사관이 위험을 직감하고 소대를 대피시켜서 고성능 사제폭탄을 피해 군인 열 명 이상의 생명을 구했지요. 생각해 보면 그 군인들만 목숨을 구한 것이 아니고 그 자녀들도 그 자녀들의 자녀들까지 몇 세대가 한 사람의 결정으로 생명을 구한 셈이지요.

* ambush
1. an act or instance of lying concealed so as to attack by surprise: The highwaymen waited in ambush near the road.
2. an act or instance of attacking unexpectedly from a concealed position.
3. the concealed position itself: They fired from ambush.
4. those who attack suddenly and unexpectedly from a concealed position.
ambush는 군대용어로 매복 (숨어있음) 해 있다가 기습 공격한다는 의미이지만 1번 에서 보는 것처럼 남에게 들키지 않게 숨어 있는 상태를 묘사할 때도 쓰인다. 1번에서 highwaymen은 길에 숨어 있다가 강도짓을 하는 무리를 가리킨다.
IED=Improvised Explosive Device. 급조폭발물 또는 사제폭탄을 뜻한다.
But changing the world can happen anywhere and anyone can do it. So what starts here can indeed change the world. But the question is, what will the world look like after you change it? Well, I’m confident that it will look much, much better. But if you’ll *humor this old sailor for just a moment, I have a few suggestions that might help you on your way to a better world.
And while these lessons were learned during my time in the military, I can assure you that it matters not whether you’ve ever served a day in uniform, it matters not your gender, your ethnic or religious background, your orientation or your social status. Our struggles in this world are similar and the lessons to overcome those struggles and to move forward, changing ourselves and changing the world around us will apply equally to all.
그러나 세상을 바꾸는 일은 어디서든지 일어날 수 있고 우리 모두 할 수 있습니다. 여러분이 한 일 하나하나가 세상을 바꿀 수 있습니다. 이런 질문을 할 수 있겠네요. 우리가 세상을 바꾸고 나면 세상은 어떤 모습일까요? 저는 확신합니다. 세상은 훨씬 더 멋진 모습이 될 것이라 확신합니다. 또 늙은 해군의 연설을 잠시만 참아 주시면 여러분이 더 좋은 세상을 만드는데 도움이 될 수 있는 제안을 몇 가지 드리려고 합니다.
군인으로 근무할 때 배운 것들이지만 군인 경험이 없어도 남자건 여자건 인종, 종교가 어떤 것이건 사회에서 어떤 위치를 차지하고 있건 상관없이 모든 사람에게 해당하는 제안이라고 생각합니다. 우리가 이 세상에서 겪는 어려움은 비슷합니다. 그리고 그런 어려움을 극복하고 우리 자신을 바꾸고 세상을 바꾸면서 앞으로 나가는 데 필요한 조건도 우리 모두에게 똑같이 적용될 수 있다고 생각합니다.

여기서 humor라는 단어를 동사로 사용하여 다음과 같은 뜻을 전달하고자 하였다.

“별로 중요한 것 같지도 않고 재미도 없을 수 있지만, 잠시만 참고 내가 하려는 말을 들어주기 바랍니다.”
세련된 표현이다. 이런 표현을 익히기 위해 좋은 영어책도 많이 읽고 연설문도 공부하기를 적극 권한다.
I’ve been a Navy SEAL for 36 years, but it all began when I left UT for basic SEAL training in Coronado, California. Basic SEAL training is six months, a long torturous runs in the soft sand, midnight swims in the cold water off San Diego, obstacle courses, unending calisthenics, days without sleep and always being cold, wet and miserable.
It is six months of being constantly harassed by professionally trained warriors who seek to find the weak of mind and body and eliminate them from ever becoming a Navy SEAL. But the training also seeks to find those students who can lead in an environment of constant stress, chaos, failure and hardships. To me, basic SEAL training was a lifetime of challenges *crammed into six months. So here are the 10 lessons I learned from basic SEAL training that hopefully will be a value to you as you move forward in life.

육 개월 동안 고도로 훈련받은 교관들은 육체와 정신에 약점이 있는 훈련생들을 찾아내서 SEAL 요원이 되지 못하게 퇴교시키려 애썼지요. 그렇지만 동시에 훈련은 지속되는 스트레스와 혼란과 실패 속에서도 리도 역할을 할 수 있는 사람을 찾아내는 과정이기도 했습니다. 저에게는 이 훈련 과정은 살면서 겪을 수 있는 모든 도전을 육 개월 안에 욱여넣은 것 같았습니다. SEAL 훈련을 받으면서 배운 10가지 교훈을 알려주려고 합니다. 여러분이 인생을 살아가면서 여러분께 가치 있는 교훈이 되기를 기대합니다.

To me, basic SEAL training was a lifetime of challenges *crammed into six months.

2. To study hastily for an impending examination: was up all night cramming for the history midterm. 시험이 닥쳤을 때 밤새며 공부하면서 시험 칠 내용을 머리에 밀어 넣는다.
Every morning in SEAL training, my instructors who were at the time were all Vietnam veterans, would show up in my barracks room and the first thing they do is *inspect my bed. If I did it right, the corners would be square, the covers would be pulled tight, the pillow centered just under the headboard and the extra blanket folded neatly at the foot of the rack. It was a simple task, mundane at best, but every morning we were required to make our bed to perfection.

the first thing they do is *inspect my bed.
이 표현에서 is to inspect 나 inspecting이 되어야 하는 것이 아닌지 혼동되었다면 지금 표현이 문법적으로 정확하다는 점을 강조한다. the first thing they do가 문법적으로 맞는 표현 (thing과 they do 사이의 목적격 관계 대명사인 that이 생략)이기 때문에 is 다음에도 원형인 (they) inspect가 와야 한다.
It seemed a little ridiculous at the time, particularly in light of the fact that we were aspiring to be real warriors, tough battle-hardened SEALs. But the wisdom of this simple act has been proven to me many times over. If you made your bed every morning, you will have accomplished the first task of the day. It will give you a small sense of pride and it will encourage you to do another task and another and another. And by the end of the day, that one task completed will have turned into many tasks completed. Making your bed will also reinforce the fact that the little things in life *matter.

Making your bed will also reinforce the fact that the little things in life *matter.
matter가 명사로 많이 쓰이지만 (예 What’s the matter?), 동사로 쓰이면 중요하고 의미가 있다는 뜻이다. to be of importance; signify: It matters to me.
If you can’t do the little things right, you’ll never be able to do the big things right. And if *by chance have a miserable day, you will come home to a bed that is made, that you made. And a made bed gives you encouragement that tomorrow will be better. So if you want to change the world, start off by making your bed.
작은 일은 제대로 하지 못한다면 큰 일도 제대로 할 수 없습니다. 그리고 하루 종일 아무 일도 이루지 못하고 큰일을 성취하지 못해도 끔찍한 하루를 보내도, 집에 돌아오면 여러분이 깔끔하게 정돈한 침대를 볼 수 있습니다. 그런 침대를 보면 내일은 좀 더 나은 하루가 될 것이라는 안도감도 들게 될 것입니다. 그러니까 세상을 바꾸고 싶다면 아침에 침대부터 정돈하는 일부터 시작하십시오.

가장 많이 쓰이는 용법은 우연히 또는 계획하지 않고라는 뜻으로 쓰일 때다.

두 번째, 주로 부탁할 때 혹시 가능할까요? 등의 뜻으로 사용할 때이다.

또한 아닐 것 같지만 혹시 몰라서 뜻으로도 쓰일 수 있다.
