Where the frontier once symbolized perennial rebirth, Donald Trump’s border wall — even if it remains mostly phantasmagorical, a perpetual negotiating chip between Congress and the White House — now looms like a tombstone.
프론티어는 원래 끝없는 재탄생을 상징했다. 도날드 트럼프가 추구하는 국경에 세우는 벽은 실제로 가능할 지도 모르는 상태지만, 의회와 트럼프가 이끄는 행정부 간에 영원한 협상의 도구 역할이나 할 따름이고, 이제는 국경에 세운 비석에 다름 아니다.
A fortunate few, of course, still have access to something that looks like a frontier. Post-Cold-War globalization has afforded corporations their own endless horizons. And the fantasies of the superrich, no less than their capital, are given free range: They imagine themselves as living in floating villages beyond government control, or they fund research meant to help them escape death, upload their consciousness into the cloud or fly off to Mars.

But for most everyone else in America, the boundaries of freedom have contracted. A whole generation may never recover from the Great Recession that followed the financial crisis of 2008. Social mobility is stagnant. And there is a growing sense — as vast stretches of the American West burn, as millions of trees die, as the acidifying oceans fill up with plastic and as species disappear — that the world stands on the precipice of catastrophe. It might be tempting to think that President Trump’s border wall represents a more accurate, hard-bitten assessment of how the world works. The frontier was, after all, a mirage, an ideological relic of a naïve or dishonest universalism. There were, in fact, limits and costs to America’s seemingly unstoppable growth. The border wall, in contrast, is a monument to disenchantment, to a brutal geopolitical realism: Racism was never transcended; there’s not enough wealth to go around; not everyone in the global economy can have a seat at the table.
그러나 대부분 미국인들의 자유는 움츠려 들었다. 많은 세대들이 2008년의 경제 위기에서 회복하지 못하고 있고 아마도 앞으로도 못할 가능성이 크다. 상위 계급으로 올라갈 수 있는 길도 막혀있다. 우리는 내놓고 말은 안하지만 알고 있다. 미 대륙 서부를 뒤덮었던 숲들은 사라지고 해양은 산성화 되면서 플라스틱으로 가득 차고 해양 생물들은 멸종되고, 세상은 언제 망해도 이상하지 않는 위기에 처해 있음을. 사실 트럼프가 세우는 벽들이 실제 세상이 어떻게 돌아가고 있는지를 우리에게 정확하고 냉정하게 알려주는 기준이라고 우길 수도 있다. 사실 프론티어는 세상을 정확하게 파악하지 못하거나 짐짓 진실을 감추며 그래도 세계를 품으려 하는 환상 같은 일이 아니던가? 미국의 끝없는 성장에도 사실은 한계가 있고 어쩔 수 없이 치러야할 대가가 있기 마련이다. 반면 벽은 서로를 갈라놓는 기념비이며 피눈물 없는 정치와 영토에 대한 국제 현실을 반영하고 있다. 인종차별에는 절대 베푸는 마음이 없다. 함께 나눌 돈이 없다. 경제는 세계화 되었지만 그 혜택을 누구나 누리는 것은 아니다.
In a nation like ours, founded on a cult of exceptionalism — a belief that the country was somehow exempt from the burdens of history — the realization that life isn’t limitless was bound to be traumatic. It was also bound to produce, in the symbol of a wall, its own governing illusion.
미국인은 자신들은 예외적인 존재이며, 역사의 흐름에서 당연히 부담해야 할 대가에서도 어떻게든지 빠져나갈 수 있다는 믿음을 갖고 있다. 삶이 유한하다는 명백한 사실도 어떻게든 피하려 한다. 우리를 남으로부터 구분해줄 벽 때문에 스스로를 속이며 환상 속에 살고 있다.
